| The Story Behind This Watch |
The Panerai homage. Which way to go. So many options. Some cheap, some not so much; some fake, some just homages. I have tried a few (see my Sold watches page) and each time I keep dumping them. I’ve had as many as 6 fakes, some good, some crap, some great. Couldn’t wear ‘em – seeing the Panerai on the dial and knowing what they were I felt cheap. I felt like a fraud. I was only cheating myself. I finally decided at the end of 2006 that I wanted to own one of the better Panerai wanna-be’s available, the IWI.
I first bought an IWI Marine Diver GMT-B, as I had a half-way decent fake of the watch and liked it. To be honest, I found the fake to be better looking than the IWI. The dial on the rep was better, the date magnification was better, the bezel was better. And this was on a fake that I had not owned for almost four years. Yikes. So I decied to see if someone wanted to do a swap – my GMT for your non-GMT. As luck would have it, I found a taker and ended up with what I wanted. A simpler, handwind International Watchman Marine Diver.
I do like this version much better. My gripe is I need to find a better strap to go with the watch. I cannot get one that fits properly (my wrist, that is). I think that I can be done with the Panerai thing now that I have this one and the MM Destro.
I hope…
