The Story Behind This Watch

I had seen this watch on eBay several months ago, searing for, well, watches, but not this one in particular. I remember it later on, but wasn’t able to find it. Somehow, while searching generically for watches again, I came across it and decided to “take the plunge.”

And I must say, that I am quite pleased with my plunge. The watch is quite obviously taylored after the Rolex Daytona, which is a style of watch that I like. Naturally, there’s no way I could afford the real thing, and most of the Daytona clones are either quartz or, if automatic, the subdials are day, date and month rather than true chrono functions. That’s the beauty of this watch, it’s a true chronograph and all the subdials function the way they should. But what powers it?

Good question. The seller stated that it was an Asian 7750, but the configuration of the subdials is wrong for a 7750. If it were a Valjoux 7750 clone, the continous seconds would be at 6 o’clock, the minutes at 9 and hours at 3. This has the seconds at 9, hours at 6 and minutes at 3. So, it’s a clone of a 7753 (or is it 7751?). Either way, since I don’t have a Rolex caseback opener, I won’t know anytime soon.

Thus far the watch is working well. The chrono functions as it should, and it’s keeping time to within around +20 seconds a day. The quality control is a bit slack as some of the printing on the bezel is blured, like it was rubbed while the paint was still wet.

Overall, for a hair over $200 I am very pleased with this watch. It’s a fine addition and I expect it will receive a lot of wrist time.

Why did I sell it? It was a nice watch, but, I just got tired of it. It worked fine and looked good, but something else was calling (as it always is) and this one had to go.
